Terra State Community College is offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service.  Federal and State returns are being completed by students and oversight of the preparation is being monitored by Terra’s accounting faculty.  This service is free to the community.  The service is available now through April 12.  The schedule is Wednesdays from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm and is located in the Roy Klay Building A, Room 314 and on Thursdays, from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the GTB Building B, Room 305. The service will not be available March 7 & 8 since students will be on Spring Break.

If you would like to take advantage of this service, you will need to bring the following items with you:

  • Photo identification (drivers license or state identification)
  • Social Security numbers and birth dates for taxpayer, spouse, and dependents
  • Wage statements such as W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, etc.
  • Bank interest and dividend states (Form 1099-INT)
  • Copy of your 2010 federal and state tax forms
  • Total day care expenses paid, day care providers name and tax identification number
  • Any additional information regarding your income and expenses
  • Bank routing numbers and checking/savings account number for direct deposit.

Please remember this is only tax preparation for federal and state forms.  You will still be responsible to complete any city and school tax forms if necessary based on your taxing district.

Who said you still can’t get anything for free?  This is a great opportunity for the community and also gives Terra students practice in the tax preparation field.
